Orthodontic Instruments

Q:  The Orthodontic Office that my family is going to doesn’t package their instruments, but has them in the open on racks and holders.  I as the Doctor about it and he told me that OSHA doesn’t require Orthodontic Offices to package the instruments, is this true?

A:  OSHA doesn’t require Orthodontic Office or any Dental Office to package their instruments because OSHA hasn’t any jurisdiction in this matter.  It is Consumer Affairs and the Dental Board of California who regulations the sterilization requirements for Dental Offices.

According to the Dental Board Infection Control Regulations Section 1005, Orthodontic Offices are not exempt and must package their instruments per the regulations.  I suggest your Doctor start reading the Dental Practice Act and the Dental Board Infection Control Regulations and get the office into compliance.
