Advice is like everything else – you get what you paid for!
If I got a nickel every time I heard “our consultant told us to do that” the IRS would be very happy. It seems that there are more compliance consultants than there are dishonest politicians – ok I’m wrong, there are not that many compliance consultants. Basically a consultant provides information and solutions to problems, however if the consultant lacks real world experience and their information is outdated or incomplete the results of their advise is devastating, placing added liability on the practice not to mention a major waste of time and money. Surprisingly I find that most compliance consultants who work with dental practices, once work in a dental practice themselves and had gain their compliance knowledge by being the “OSHA person”, before deciding to journey on their own and become a consultant. Does this make them an expert? Does brushing my teeth make me a dentist?
When seeking the services of a consultant look for someone who can really walk-the-walk and talk-the-talk. Get an expert with expertise in all regulation requirements for a dental practice and not just OSHA, having experience as an inspector or investigator is a big plus too. Don’t make the decision to hire the consultant based on low fees or gimmicky guarantees like “we will pay the OSHA fines”. Keep this in mind, an expert in healthcare compliance management will not only provide a greater return on your investment, but protect your assets while reducing liability. Take your time and choose wisely!
